Highlands & Islands Enterprise (HIE),
Summary:
Technologies utilised at innovative Careers Preparation Event (themed ‘Heroes’) enabling young people to build a personal career log (iStore) recording future aims and ambitions in a reflective central web-based resource.
Description:
Young people across the Highlands & Islands will participate in out-of-school Careers Preparation Events – an immersive, exciting and memorable opportunity for young people to start picturing the life they want. They will be encouraged and supported to take stock of their career learning and progress so far and focus on their future – not just their future after leaving school but choice over their school-based and lifelong career learning and decision making.
ICT and digital media will be applied at the events to support these objectives and contribute to continued research into the application of technology in a learning and skills environment. The technology will enable young people to create a personal profile (iStore) recording their current and future career aims and ambitions. This resource may be held in the new school intranet network (GLOW).
This work can be applied at other events, showcasing technology and its application to policy makers in education and skills, employers and educators – linking directly to the regional Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths strategy.
HIE will fund the ICT and digital media used at the events and would value collaboration with Futurelab expertise on project development and ideas, evaluation and research.
How it might be used:
The events will give young people an exciting and memorable opportunity to picture the life they want, open their eyes to the future and encourage them to take more control, to exercise choice in respect of their career learning and planning.
ICT and digital media will enable young people to create a personal profile (iStore) recording their current and future career aims and ambitions.
Examples of the technologies that may be used to create the iStore:
Barcoding – event items will be barcoded, young people will wireless scan and record items they are interested in on the day. This information will be recorded in the iStore.
Video diary room – the diary room (video booth) will be a mechanism for capturing video messages from the learner on their aims and ambitions for the future and saved to the iStore. Also used for evaluating the event.
Aging software – the software will be used specifically to age a digital photograph of the young person, to support their visualisation of themselves in the future.
Future newspaper – young people attending the event will have the opportunity to create a future newspaper using technology to create an e-safe website and online newspaper.
