Summary
Our goal is to provide science-based lectures and podcasts to foster discussion between scientists and the general public to allow the public to engage with science.
Description
The main endeavour of the Podcast University Lecture Science and Education (PULSE) Project is to promote scientific communication by making diverse scientific topics accessible to academics, students, and the general public whilst also having the potential to stimulate worldwide discussion on scientific issues. This will be achieved by inviting researchers in various scientific disciplines to communicate their knowledge via lectures and podcasts, which will be available for free download from our website www.pulse-project.com. The PULSE podcasts will have scientists giving introductions to their field, discussing their research, issues in their area of interest, and also future directions of research in their discipline. There will also be discussions on various subjects which they feel may need to be explained in laymen’s terms in order for students to fully understand the implications of their work. Each contributor will have their own webpage which includes their PULSE podcasts, a biography, links to their publications, suggestions for further reading, and any other additions the person feels are relevant. To enable worldwide communication on scientific issues, PULSE will have reader forums where the public can discuss a myriad of scientific topics and Question and Answer sessions with researchers allowing interaction between the student and scientist.
How it might be used
The home page will include current scientific news, links to the newly-added lectures and podcasts, and links to the Q&A sessions with scientific contributors and forums. There will also be a search feature that will allow searches by subject, person, or title. The user can listen to the podcasts immediately or can stream the video lecture in full screen mode. There is also the option to download the lecture or podcast to be accessed later or via an MP3 or MP4 player. The website will consist of individual pages tailored for each scientist contributor. The general format of these pages will include the contributors’ unique lectures, podcasts, biography, references and further reading to the material discussed and links to their academic and related sites. These pages will be divided by subject, which will be accessed through the home page. To enable worldwide discussion of scientific issues, PULSE will have forums where students can discuss a myriad of scientific topics and Question and Answer sessions with scientist contributors. The users will have the option to sign up to PULSE updates (RSS feed) that will inform them of the latest podcasts and breaking news in the scientific world.
